Domenico Ramelli
Dance Captain, Freedom of the Seas
Domenico started working with Royal Caribbean in 2013 as a dancer on the Voyager of the Seas. Looking back on the past ten years, he says he’s living his best life.
While living in Rome, he first auditioned for a role with Royal Caribbean out of curiosity after a friend told him about the opportunity. Two months later, he got his first contract on Voyager of the Seas with an itinerary to Australia, New Zealand and Asia.
He enjoyed it so much he decided to audition for a second contract on Explorer of the Seas. Nailed it. Then he went for a third contract, this time on Jewel of the Seas. He nailed it again – but this time, he was elevated to Dance Captain. Now, several contracts later, he’s proud to still hold that title and the responsibilities that come with it.
“I really enjoyed and appreciated that nobody knew me, but I was offered opportunities based on my talent,” he said. “Becoming Dance Captain was a big step forward for me, and doing it contract after contract gave me clarity that I would love to be a show director for Royal one day.” But only once he’s ready to hang up his dancing shoes.
“Royal gave me something that I can rework and give it back,” he said. “I feel like I’ve gained so much in these years that I could really pour that experience into fresh talent.”
Working alongside top-tier talent and the latest technology inspires him to bring his best to work every day. Whether performing with aerial artists, drones, or moving set pieces, there’s a lot on a Royal Caribbean stage that you wouldn’t find in a shoreside theater, he said. This, on top of the raw talent, makes the shows even more spectacular.
In a twist of fate, he met his future husband while both were working on Grandeur of the Seas in 2017. Since then, they’ve had the unique opportunity to work and travel the world together. Domenico also had the chance to fulfill a bucket list dream of performing in Cats while on Oasis of the Seas, a moment his husband and mom watched with pride from the audience.
“I think my younger self would be very proud of where I am today and Royal has been such a big highlight of my career,” he said. “I feel like I’ve grown a lot as a professional, a dancer, and as a person.”
